A Viessmann heat pump for a UK house is a Vitocal 200-A ie or a Vitocal 150-A: monobloc air source heat pumps with propane (R290) as the refrigerant, both listed in the MCS product directory. The 200-A ie, MCS-listed since July 2026, comes in four sizes; size 10 has an MCS SCOP of 5.00 at a 35 °C flow temperature and 3.72 at 55 °C, and a 5-year warranty if an installer in Viessmann's VPlus programme registers it within 30 days, it is serviced every year and it stays online.
Viessmann was founded in 1917 as a heating manufacturer in Germany, and its heating business, Viessmann Climate Solutions, has belonged to the US group Carrier since January 2024. In the UK you buy a Vitocal through an installer; the longer warranties depend on installers in Viessmann's VPlus programme. The brand suits you if you want a long warranty at no extra charge and can keep the heat pump online.

Vitocal 200-A ie
Viessmann aims the 200-A ie at budget-conscious households that join its connected system. At −7 °C outside and a 35 °C flow, the four sizes give 4.9, 5.7, 8.0 and 9.0 kW. It reaches 75 °C when it is 5 °C outside and 70 °C at −10 °C, and every size carries the A+++ energy label at both 35 and 55 °C. Viessmann says nearly all its components are developed by Viessmann and made in Europe.
Vitocal 150-A, Compact and Hybrid
The 150-A covers more sizes, from type 04 to 16, and reaches a 70 °C flow with outside temperatures down to −10 °C. The standard version needs a separate hot-water cylinder; the Compact has one built into the indoor unit, which saves fitting a cylinder in a combi home; the Hybrid pairs the heat pump with a boiler. Viessmann's UK warranty table also lists the Vitocal 100-A, the older 200-A and other models; check the code on your quote. The older 200-A, without "ie", is a different product: it has been MCS-listed since 2017 and lists a SCOP of 2.86 to 2.96 at 55 °C.
What about the Vitocal 250-A?
Viessmann's UK warranty table doesn't list it, and the only 250-A model in the MCS product directory is the 250-A Pro. If a quote offers a Vitocal 250-A for your home, ask for its MCS certificate number before you go further.
Efficiency and noise
SCOP, the seasonal coefficient of performance, is the heat a heat pump delivers over a heating season for each unit of electricity, measured on a standard test. The MCS product directory lists it for every certified model at each flow temperature; where a model is listed with several indoor units, we show the lowest figure.
MCS SCOP of the Vitocal 200-A ie and 150-A at 35 and 55 °C flow, from the MCS product directory (230 V models, lowest listed combination).
Two things stand out. The 200-A ie scores higher than the 150-A in comparable sizes at 55 °C, the temperature that matters in a house with radiators. And within each model the flow temperature matters more than the size: for the 200-A ie 10, 5.00 ÷ 3.72 = 1.34, so on the test the same heat at 55 °C takes about 34% more electricity than at 35 °C. Radiators that let the system run cooler do more for your bills than the brand badge.
A test SCOP is also not what a home achieves: the government-funded Electrification of Heat trial measured a median of 2.78 across 428 air source heat pumps. At about that level, our example home (a 1970s gas semi using 9,500 kWh of gas a year, 85% boiler efficiency assumed) would pay about the same for its heating units with a heat pump as with its boiler, on Ofgem price cap unit rates (GB average, direct debit, 1 October to 31 December 2026, no VAT on electricity in Great Britain until 31 March 2027) with standing charges left out; the result depends on the house, the installation and the tariff. The arithmetic is in heat pump running costs.
How loud is a Viessmann heat pump?
Sound power is a property of the unit; sound pressure is what reaches a window and falls with distance. In England and Wales, permitted development needs the MCS 020(a) calculation to show no more than 37 dB(A) at a neighbour's nearest window or door. It uses the sound power from the label or datasheet; the figures Viessmann gives for its quiet mode may not be used.
An example: a 200-A ie 10 (54 dB(A)) on the ground against your house wall (two reflecting surfaces, factor 4), with no fence between it and a neighbour's bedroom window. At 3 m the MCS formula gives 54 + 10 × log(4 ÷ (4 × π × 3²)) = 54 − 14.5 = 39.5 dB(A), over the limit. At 4.0 m it gives 54 − 17.0 = 37.0 dB(A), just within it. A 150-A 08 at 51 dB(A) gives 36.5 dB(A) at 3 m. A solid fence or wall that blocks the view also counts in the calculation; more on placement in heat pump noise, and check with your local planning authority before you commit to a spot.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an air source heat pump if your home qualifies; some off-gas-grid homes replacing oil or LPG may qualify for £9,000 instead, for applications properly made from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Your installer, who must be MCS-certified and in an approved consumer code such as RECC or HIES, applies to Ofgem and deducts the grant from your bill, so get the voucher before work starts. A heat pump supplied and installed in your home also carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. Scotland and Northern Ireland differ: Scotland has its own grant and loan through Home Energy Scotland, and Northern Ireland has no grant open to every homeowner; the details are in heat pump grants. If you are replacing oil heating, ask the quote to say who removes the tank and what that costs.
The grant follows the installation, not the brand, but the model matters: the MCS design standard requires the heat pump to be listed on the MCS website. All four 200-A ie sizes are listed with certificates running to 31 July 2036, and the 150-A sizes to December 2031 or March 2033. The 150-A Hybrid is listed too, but a hybrid gets no grant: your existing gas, oil or LPG heating must be fully replaced rather than kept as a back-up; the rules are written about heating, so if you want to keep gas for cooking, ask your installer.
Warranty
Every Vitocal comes with 2 years of parts and labour cover as standard. What you get beyond that depends on the model and on who registers it:

What the 5 years ask of you. Viessmann's 200-A ie page calls 5 years standard, but its warranty terms make them conditional: a VPlus installer registers the job within 30 days, the heat pump is serviced every year by Viessmann, a VPlus installer or another qualified engineer, you keep the records, and the heat pump stays online for remote monitoring for the whole five years. Miss one and you are left with the standard 2 years. The heat pump must also be installed within 12 months of its date of manufacture, and moving it without approval can cut the cover.
The 10-year plan. At £260 plus VAT a year it comes to about £2,600 plus VAT over ten years, before the yearly increases in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI), and it includes planned maintenance, so compare it with ten years of booking your own service. It has to be bought on day one.
Exclusions and claims. The terms exclude frost and other weather damage, poor water quality, sludge and scale, and faults caused by the installation. Viessmann's general Vitocal terms suggest contacting your installer first, while the 200-A ie terms say to contact Viessmann or its authorised service provider; Viessmann may ask for an upfront payment while it finds the cause, refunded if the fault is covered. The warranty adds to your statutory rights against the installer; it doesn't replace them. How servicing works is in heat pump servicing and lifespan.
Controls, app and tariffs
The 200-A ie runs on Viessmann's One Base Intelligence platform, with a Universal Controller on the indoor unit that has a 7-inch touchscreen. You control the heating and hot water through the ViCare app, and Viessmann says automatic software upgrades are available. The 150-A has a control unit with a 7-inch colour touchscreen and can also be run from the app.
Solar panels and batteries. Viessmann says the 200-A ie can be extended step by step with its own solar panels, battery storage and car charger, and that the platform can include compatible products from other makers. If you already have solar panels from another brand, ask your installer to confirm in writing that they work together.
Tariffs. Viessmann says a dynamic electricity tariff can be set up in the ViCare app for the 200-A ie, and that its Energy Management system adjusts the system's energy use automatically; ask your installer which UK tariffs it works with. The 150-A page describes no tariff feature, so on a time-of-use tariff you set the heating and hot-water schedules yourself in the app.
Who Viessmann suits
A semi or detached house with radiators. The 200-A ie 10, with 8.0 kW at −7 °C, sits close to the 8 kW median size of heat pumps whose Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants were paid from July to September 2026; the survey decides the size. Its 3.72 to 3.82 at 55 °C helps where radiators keep the flow temperature up.
A smaller or well-insulated home. The 200-A ie 06 (4.9 kW at −7 °C) and the 150-A 04 and 06 cover lower heat losses; the heat-loss survey decides the size.
A combi home short of space. The 150-A Compact puts the cylinder in the indoor unit.
Less suited if your broadband is unreliable or you don't want the heat pump online, because the 5-year cover depends on it; if your outdoor unit has to sit close to a neighbour's window; or if you live in Northern Ireland and want the 10-year plan.
How Viessmann fares in our comparison. In our comparison of air source heat pumps we score the model nearest 8 kW from each brand on four published criteria: efficiency at 55 °C (40%), outdoor sound power (25%), the warranty you get at no extra charge (25%) and maximum flow temperature (10%). For the 200-A ie 10, the 3.72 at 55 °C, the 5-year warranty (at no extra charge when its conditions are met) and the 75 °C raise the score; the 54 dB(A) sound power lowers it. Manufacturers and installers don't pay for placement; how we score is in our editorial method.
Checklist for your quote
What a Viessmann quote should name
The full model code, such as AWMOF-201.A1.10-230 for the 200-A ie 10, the indoor unit, and the MCS certificate number.
That it is the 200-A ie and not the older 200-A, which is a different product.
That the installer is in Viessmann's VPlus programme and registers the job on VPlus within 30 days.
How the heat pump will stay online, and what happens to the warranty if the connection drops.
Who services it every year, what it costs, and whether the Premium Service Plan is offered at registration.
For the 150-A, whether the paid 7-year extension is included, and whether £360 is a one-off or a yearly fee.
The cylinder: the Compact's built-in one or a separate cylinder, with its size in litres.
The sound power figure used and the MCS 020(a) result at your neighbours' nearest window.
How to put two quotes side by side, and what consumer-code protection to ask about, is in choosing an MCS installer.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Viessmann heat pump cost?
Viessmann doesn't publish homeowner prices; the installer prices the whole job. Across all brands, the median installed price of an air source heat pump in England and Wales, for jobs whose Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants were paid from July to September 2026, was £12,826 before the grant, as reported by MCS installers, with VAT included. In England and Wales, if your home qualifies, the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant comes off that.
Is the Vitocal 200-A ie eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
All four sizes are listed in the MCS product directory, which the MCS design standard requires. Whether your installation gets the grant in England and Wales depends on your home, an MCS-certified installer and Ofgem's decision, not on the brand. A Vitocal 150-A Hybrid that keeps a boiler gets no grant.
What is the difference between the Vitocal 150-A and the 200-A ie?
Both are propane monoblocs. The 200-A ie comes in four sizes, reaches 75 °C at 5 °C outside and has the higher MCS SCOP at 55 °C in comparable sizes; it also has the 5-year warranty route. The 150-A covers more sizes, up to type 16, reaches 70 °C, comes as a Compact with a built-in cylinder, and has 2 years as standard.
How long is the Viessmann heat pump warranty?
Two years of parts and labour as standard. The Vitocal 200-A ie gets 5 years at no extra charge if a VPlus installer registers it within 30 days and it is serviced yearly and kept online, or 10 years with the paid Premium Service Plan. The 150-A can be extended to 7 years for a fee.
Can I get a Viessmann Vitocal 250-A in the UK?
Viessmann's UK warranty table doesn't list the Vitocal 250-A, and the only 250-A model in the MCS product directory is the 250-A Pro, which Viessmann's UK site lists separately. For a house, the UK choice is the 200-A ie or the 150-A; ask for the MCS certificate number of any 250-A you are offered.
How loud is a Viessmann heat pump?
The 200-A ie has a sound power of 48 to 55 dB(A) at the energy-label test point, depending on size, and the 150-A 51 to 55 dB(A). In our example, a 200-A ie 10 against a wall needs about 4 m to a neighbour's window to meet the 37 dB(A) permitted development limit in England and Wales.
Heat pump running costs in our example 1970s semi: 2,884 kWh and £759 a year at SCOP 2.8, £850 at 2.5 and £686 at 3.1 (Ofgem price cap, 1 October to 31 December 2026), against £865 for gas including a £108 standing charge that ends only if the gas supply is disconnected, as we assume.
